Pat Matheny and Timm update

In earlier posts I've mentioned Timm's connection to the music of Pat Matheny (notably, Matheny's 1981 album "As Witchita Fall, So Falls Wichita" was listened to by Timm on his laptop iTunes the day that he passed away last April.)

Christie e-mailed me today a bit from one of Timm's journals dated Feb. 13, 1992 about his love of Pat Matheny's sound, which to him was a sound of freedom -- open road , winding river, big skies, who knows what to come around the next bend ... A happy music for Timm.

I've had a terrible morning at work, but the rest of the day went incredibly well. I seem to be stuck in "remember when" tonight. A Pat Metheny song is on the radio, and it reminds me of the concert of his I taped off the radio when I stayed somewhere in central Utah. I can't remember the name of the town, but I can picture it so well. I was staying in a rather modest motel on the edge of town. It was after my first trip, so I was still reveling in the feelings of freedom. I remember driving through the center of town, little there was, past the Artic Circle burger joint. There is a quality to the area that's very western and uniquely "Utah". Something in the air; the way the sun shines at an angle and the hues it brings. For some reason Pat Matheny's music blends in so well.

I think the sense that strikes me the most is that of freedom. Having a job, time off and money in my pocket. Just kind of perusing the area - reveling in the discovery that each new bend in the road brought. Feeling physically fit and like I'd just been let out of jail. I'm not so sure the jail was my job, as mush as the directionless existence I endured for the six months or so prior. Will I feel that way again? I hope so.
