A circus past and a punk cathedral

It is a joy to find out a wealth of story behind a photo. My mother Mary sent an email this morning with background on two recently-posted images. (Note to the computer-challenged: if you want to review the pictures, click on the link, which appears as fainter text; to get back to the post, hit the back button.)

The photo of Timm, Bess and me brought back some happy memories. Bess was a retired circus performer who never had children, but she seemed both protective and interested in Molly and Timm. I recall how she would sit in her chair that looked out on our back porch. She would watch for Timm and Molly to come home from school.

The first year we lived in Winter Park after moving from Illinois, Florida's storms were loud and intimidating for Timm and Molly who were unaccustomed to such sudden fury. They would run back to Bess' apartment for security, presumably taking their two dogs, Monty and Tippy, with them.

I once apologized to Bess for having our two pets so close to where she lived. She, however, only laughed. Traveling with the circus, she had been accustomed to lions, tigers, and bears...what were two domesticated dogs, who couldn't even do one trick?!

An explanation about a photo in A Panoply of Life - I think it is #11...the punk couple, if you know the one I mean. Timm had told me that he had been asked by a reporter to go with her to Portland where she would be doing a feature article about a punk church. The Bridge sought to reach out to Generation Y with loud music and God's love. The church also doubled as a punk-rock club called the Meow Meow. It was nonconventional, described in the article as "not your grandparent's church." Timm was fascinated and spoke enthusiastically to me about his visit to The Bridge. The article with two photos that Timm shot appeared in the June 2001 issue of Charisma, which I found in Timm's file.
